Overview:

You can create some fun and interesting designs simply by being a little creative with your approach. Most of the technique is in the way you wrap the fabric, use rubber bands to define space and use objects to create circles and odd shapes. A more advanced approach will be a later post. You can use colored fabrics and use a contrasting dye color to arrive at some beautiful combinations.

Ingredients:

• a tub or sink that can be in use for a few hours

• a selection of dyes – these can be found at Arts and Crafts stores or Dept. Stores

• various sizes of rubber bands

• a good pair of rubber gloves

• some marbles and other various size round objects

• access to tap water

• select some t-shirts, cotton shorts, old jeans, etc.

 Preparation:

Sketch out a basic design or simply start by tying objects into the material

Rubber band your garment according to the design you want. There is a long list of designs to choose from.

Some basic designs are as follows:

By placing a marble in the fabric and securing with a rubber band, it will be a circle or starburst depending on how large the marble

You can create lines by rolling the fabric and placing rubber bands at intervals

Alternating rubber bands and marbles creates a layered effect of starbursts and lines

Wadding the fabric and tying with large rubber bands gives a more “free and wild” look

Try various methods on old pieces of fabric until you have the combination you like and then apply to your chosen fabric.

Put on your rubber gloves to mix the dye in with the water. Follow the instructions on the box. Rit makes a series of dependable dyes that are easy to use and to clean up after. There are other brands available that have a variety of colors.

It normally takes about 15 minutes to 20 minutes for the dye to set. It will darken the longer you keep the fabric in the dye, so keep on an eye on things until it is just the right color. Then, remove and rinse with cold running water. When the excess dye has been flushed, remove the rubber bands and other objects.

Hang the fabric out to dry in the sun or in a warm place until dry.
You then can repeat the process by selecting a small area of the fabric you’ve just finished, and place a rubber band or marble with a rubber band around it and let that area hang over the edge of the sink into a different colored dye.  It’s easier if you can secure a hanger or piece of strong string to hang the fabric above the tub allowing the desired section to dip into the dye.
This is a fun project for all ages.
